How to Check Your USCIS Case Status

By Pacheco Couceiro

After you file an application or petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the agency gives you tools to follow your case online. Many families in Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley use them to see what has happened on a case and what comes next. This guide explains how to find your receipt number, how to use the Case Status Online tool, how to read USCIS processing times, and which notices USCIS sends. Each point comes from official USCIS pages, linked below.

Step 1: Find your receipt number

To check your case status online, you need your case receipt number. USCIS describes it as a unique 13-character identifier that it provides for each application or petition it receives, used to identify and track its cases. The receipt number consists of three letters followed by 10 numbers. USCIS gives examples of the letters, such as EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC or IOE (USCIS: Checking Your Case Status Online).

You can find the receipt number on the notices of action USCIS has sent you.

Step 2: Understand the notice you received

USCIS uses several types of Form I-797 to communicate with applicants and petitioners. USCIS states that Form I-797 is not a form you can fill out; it is a notice the agency sends (USCIS: Form I-797 Types and Functions). According to that page:

Knowing which type you have helps you understand what the notice is telling you. A receipt notice confirms that USCIS received a filing; it is not an approval.

Step 3: Use Case Status Online

USCIS says you can verify your case status online from home, the office or a cell phone by going to Case Status Online through uscis.gov. When you enter your receipt number:

USCIS encourages you to read its Privacy Act statement, which appears under the "Check Status" button, before checking. The system shows the last action taken on your case and lets you know the next steps, if applicable. To check another case, you can enter a new receipt number in the "Enter Another Receipt Number" field (USCIS: Checking Your Case Status Online).

Step 4: Check processing times

USCIS publishes case processing times on its Check Case Processing Times page. To use it, you select your form, the form category, and the office processing your case. USCIS says to refer to your receipt notice to find this information.

The page currently notes that processing times for certain form types may no longer list a specific service center location and may instead list "Service Center Operations (SCOPS)." USCIS adds that you may continue to receive correspondence listing a specific service center (USCIS: Processing Times, checked October 10, 2026). Because published times change, check the page directly rather than relying on an older printout or screenshot.

Step 5: Consider a USCIS online account

USCIS also points to a personal online account at my.uscis.gov. According to USCIS, the account lets you receive recent case updates, including up to the last five actions on your case, and gives access to applications you filed electronically. USCIS describes the account as free (USCIS: Checking Your Case Status Online).
